(American Heart Association) Hypertension patients experienced abnormalities in the brain's small vessels that were associated with cognitive impairment, which may be an early sign of dementia. Researchers found that patients with a progression of abnormalities in what's called periventricular white matter disease on MRI, had a six-fold increased risk of cognitive decline.
